In our continuing efforts to find wonderful Darjeeling despite the weather and growing issues that have plagued that region, we started tasting teas from around Darjeeling proper. Our explorations are yielding some very happy surprises. Tea from the Sikkim region to the west provides a slightly stronger cup and we've had a great example for a little while now.

Nepal, to the north and farther up into the Himalayan hills, also grows tea, and we were lucky enough to find a lovely example of this region's tea. The Jun Chiyabari Estate grows tea itself as well as helping other small local estates sell their teas by creating a co-op of growers to produce a range of teas. This tea from the Jun Chiyabari estate is an outstanding example of what we hope is the future of economic development in this region. The same flavors that bring us all to the Darjeeling region are clearly present in this tea: a bright upper note, with a sparkle and nose that clearly comes from the Himalayan hills. Much like a first or second flush from farther south, this tea has an intriguing after note that leaves us wanting "just another cup" until we've drunk the day away. Surely we will all be waiting eagerly for the next crop when the chest we flew in is in gone.

A stunning new Assam; like nothing we've ever seen before. When the Satrupa Estate in upper Assam discovered that one hillside could produce this odd extremely long leafed tea they decided to give a non-traditional drying method a try. We are so glad they did, and you will be too.

This is the best Assam we've had in years. These odd leaves produce the perfect cup of Assam. Dark and malty without the tannic aftertaste Assam lovers have learned to bear. We can't recommend this tea enough. Though we are a bit worried about recommending it too much. With the limited supply we're worried about running out and then what would we drink?

Note: This non-traditional leaf has much more volume for its weight than most Assams, so will require more volume (but the same weight) per cup than you may be used to.

Full-bodied, richer flavor and perfume than our regular Keemun. Sipping this tea, you understand why Keemun is one of China’s Ten Most Famous Teas.

$80.00 per pound

Code: 014

A type of Keemun a bit different from ordinary. Long leaf tea, so long it carries the Chinese words for “hand-made tightly twisted curly tea” leaves often reserved for green tea. Though the leaves might lead to think otherwise, the truth in the cup will tell you this tea is clearly Keemun. Dark and sweet, with a cherry finish, this is a grade or two above most Keemun's you've probably tried, and with a quality well beyond what its price would lead you to believe. A true treat for any Chinese tea lover, and something we’ll all be craving after it’s gone.
