Oolong Tea

The world of oolong tea is large and exhilarating. The flavors range from delicate, sweet and floral to dark and full bodied. Connoisseurs of oolong teas enjoy the complex flavors and pay close attention to the regional differences as most oolong teas are prepared by hand in small batches. Oolong teas are prepared with great care in China and Taiwan, often in small clay pots with tiny cups. Because they are oxidized between green and black teas they are a great option for anyone who might find green tea too "grassy" or black tea too strong.

Each region growing tea produces a characteristic flavor and experience. You can view our oolong list by growing region, or look below for our entire list of oolong teas.

China
China has many different methods of producing oolong teas. One of the most distinguished oolong teas is called "Tie Kuan Yin" from Fujian province. It's lightly roasted over a charcoal fire to produce a complex infusion, with a flavor reminiscent of caramel. "Bai Hao" is another incredible Chinese oolong with a darker, somewhat spicy taste.

Taiwan
Taiwan's mountainous interior is known throughout the world to produce many impressive oolong teas. Some of the most famous teas are called "High Mountain Oolongs." Our Organic Tung Ting and Green Dragon oolongs are excellent examples of these big leaf teas. The flavors tend to be sweet and floral with a smooth and somewhat fruity finish.

With our recent journeys to Taiwan we were finally able to secure a source for the much requested famous Alishan oolong tea, and are very excited to be able offer it to a wider public. For those that have had the chance to taste this region’s tea in our shop when we could get some in, you may already be familiar with this lush green Taiwanese oolong, for those that haven’t tasted it before we highly recommend treating yourself to one of the undisputedly best green oolongs made in the world.

Grown on Mount Ali just on the tropic of Cancer at elevations above 3000 feet, Alishan oolong is known worldwide for its fruity overtones and smooth sweet character. The foggy days and mountain spring water give this outstanding tea a unique character almost unmatched in oolongs, and a favorite of tea drinkers worldwide. A “balled” style oolong, the leaves almost beg for multiple steepings throughout the day, giving their rich yellow liquid a chance to take you on a journey into the lush hills of central Taiwan.
